Accent lighting is most effective when the light source puts out at least 4 times the light of the surrounding area. Halogen lamps are commonly used because they deliver a pure white light keeping the objects colors true and undistorted. Many electrical companies use recessed or track lights because they can be directed and focused.

Cove lighting: Want to make your room appear bigger? Cove lighting gives the illusion of greater volume and openness by illuminating the perimeter where the ceiling meets the walls. Installed in crown moldings, soffits and on plant shelves, cove lighting looks best when it is evenly distributed and produces a consistently smooth glow. Controlling the level of light with dimmer switches is often desired to set a mood, change an appearance, or even use as a night light.

Task lighting: Work areas like kitchen islands and counter tops often require greater levels of light for safety and efficiency. The use of pendant, track, recessed and under the cabinet lights provides additional light for the work areas. Task lighting is simply providing more light or a contrast of light in an area where a specific activity is commonly done. Other areas where task light are used are in workshops, above desks, near a barbeque grill and even near a bed if you read at night.
